The name of the institute reflects its main focus, which is reflected in the range of subjects taught. The core subject is physical chemistry with an overlap into chemical physics. Gradually, the focus of the institute has evolved into four basic branches of applied physical chemistry: (bio)colloid chemistry, organic electronics and photonics, photochemistry and plasma chemistry.

The Institute has been working closely with the Materials Research Centre since its establishment in 2010. Staff and students can therefore use the cutting-edge infrastructure of this research centre on a daily basis.
